What makes us KIC

19 February 2020

The Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) for the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) sparked great interest at January’s Flipping the Odds conference. The conference was organised by Creative FLIP, an EU pilot project which supports healthy and sustainable ecosystems for the CCIs.

ELIA members attended the working sessions at the event dedicated to KIC. During her closing address at the conference, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel vouched to keep CCI at the top of her agenda, urging that valuable time should not be wasted and that all stakeholders should work together to initiate new policy proposals and take action.

What we know about KIC for the Culture and Creative Industries:

  • Like other EIT KICs, KIC for Cultural and Creative Industries will be a partnership that bringing together businesses, research centres, and higher education institutions.
  • The establishment of KIC for CCIs was first outlined in the 2021-2027 Strategic Innovation Agenda for the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology), published in July 2019 (Annex 1B, page 24).
  • The goal of KIC is to support research and innovation activities in the Cultural and Creative Industries in order to help address the following economic and societal challenges: 1) Europeans’ creativity, cultural diversity and values; 2) European identity and cohesion; 3) European employment, economic resilience, and smart growth; and 4) Europe as a global actor.
  • The call to join KIC-CCIs is expected to open in 2021, closing in 2022.

ELIA supports the creation of KIC and is following new developments closely. In December 2019 we published the position paper ‘Towards an ambitious innovation ecosystem for the Cultural and Creative Industries’, which emphasises how higher arts education can contribute to the success of KIC. This paper was then shared with members of the European Parliament, European Commission – and with the support of our members – with various national ministries and representatives.
