Commissioned by the European Cultural Foundation
, who are also organizing the Stranger Festival
and support The One Minutes
, Demos has produced a study on the booming online video culture. The survey goes beyond the usual "creativity & self-expression vs. exhibitionism & picture overload" debate to explore its potential for creating a new place to debate, a new model of change, a new basis of citizenship.
Whether youth culture can live up to these claims, and constitute a true 'video republic', is not for foundations and survey researchers to decide. But after the discussion about storytelling with modern means at the Teachers' Academy last week, and while uprisings are being YouTubed in the real world of gory political events, the Demos study provides worthwhile reading.
