The next step for the European Universities Initiative

18 February 2020

The deadline for the second round of applications for the European Universities Initiative is approaching and many higher institutions are working hard to submit by 26 February 2020.

The initiative outlining the EU’s vision to build a European Education Area is receiving much attention. Innovating and modernising the sector has become a clear priority to all.

On 5 February 2020, ELIA Head of Membership Barbara Revelli joined a stakeholder consultation hosted by the DG Education to gather feedback from the higher education sector and feed it back to the Member States.
While DG Education is working extensively with the DG Research and Innovation to develop an aligned plan of action, the Higher Education Unit is also examining the long-term impact of the European Universities Initiative. The resulting plan is due to be published in March.

The matters discussed during the consultation centred around the following key questions:
  • How can we ensure access for all to a high-quality skills-based education  which meets industry needs?
  • If higher education institutions are moving towards micro-credentials to facilitate the life-long learning path, how can we assess the quality of these new certifications?
  • How can we modernise quality assurance systems lowering the administrative burden?
  • How can we renew the governance bodies and the approach to teaching so that students are involved in both?
The Commission is ambitious and willing to tackle the social issues with the help of higher education institutions. And there is a clear understanding that universities need support to achieve this conducive collaborative and innovative environment.

The European Universities Initiative is a place where big dreams and idealistic thinking are welcome. It provides a valuable space for stakeholders to imagine what the future of higher education could be.

This remains a funding opportunity of great interest and relevance to ELIA members, and we wish all who are applying for the second round of every success with their application.
