Pioneering a European University Project
Executive Director Maria Hansen attended a conference last week, hosted by ELIA member Film University Babelsberg
; in collaboration with ELIA member University of the Arts Berlin
; the Bauhaus University, Weimar
and the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD
. The conference focused on Higher Education Institutions of Art, Design and Music as future ‘European Universities’.
The program was triggered by the current call for cooperation proposals for European Universities, an initiative by the European Commission aimed at creating a total of 20 consortia. The 2019 call was discussed extensively by Elena Tegovska of the European Commission
2019 is considered a test year and sixty million euros have been made available for the first 12 experimental models. It was good and important to hear from a pioneer in this playing field, ELIA member University of Applied Arts Vienna
which is spearheading one of the first consortia.
Maria Hansen pointed out the significance of having an art university as leading in this first round of applicants for the flagship EU initiative. Both ELIA and the AEC were present at the event to be involved in the conversation and entered into various workshops exploring opportunities and next steps. An important question on the table was ‘who decides’ on this first round. The EU is using the time-honoured peer review system and for this round, all reviewers appear to be already set.
This did bring up the question of the EU’s expert reviewer pool – please see the next item for an opportunity to be part of this and be part of the EU decision making process.
Sign up as EU expert reviewer!
The EU always needs experts in its pools for peer review. If you are interested in being selected for this, you can sign up here
, and then choose this
We encourage ELIA members to consider this possibility, as initiatives such as the new European Universities need well-balanced peer review panels and could always benefit from a solid number of these experts coming from art universities.
If you are specifically interested in reviewing the European Universities initiative, you should indicate this on the application form.
