Requested by the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA), an article about Internationalisation of EU research organisations was published on 24 July 2019 by the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS).
ELIA is encouraged by the fact that internationalisation of research is a conversation currently on-going at the European level.
The study was written by Professor Marek Kwiek, Director of the Center for Public Policy Studies and UNESCO Chair in Institutional Research and Higher Education Policy, University of Poznan, Poland, and it focusses on international research collaboration (IRC) through a quantitative study based on data on publication and citation trends over the last decade.
The aim of the study in Kwiek’s words is “to analyse, based on large-scale data on publication and citation trends over time (within the last decade), the changing nature of academic knowledge production in all European Union Member States (EU-28) towards its radically increasing internationalisation.”
One of the key results is a general increase in international collaborations by researchers from EU institutions. The study also contains policy optionsfrom the author for the enhancement of international research collaborations.
