In Memoriam Johan Verbeke (23 July 1962 - 6 August 2017)
With sadness, ELIA learned that Johan Verbeke, Professor at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and Head of the PhD School at Aarhus School of Architecture suddenly passed away.
Johan Verbeke has been involved in ELIA activities and projects for many years and was elected in the ELIA Representative Board Member in 2014. He has been an active member of the ELIA Artistic Research Working Group and made valuable contributions to the Florence Principles that were presented in Florence in December 2016. Johan was a dedicated champion of design research and was eminent in founding networks and starting projects. The main concern for him was always the early stage artists/researchers: the ADAPT-r ITN project that he was leading was the first European-funded doctoral training network in arts based research; through it, Johan made an invaluable impact on the European level. Johan has also been very much involved in ELIA's SHARE project, contributing to the step-change of Artistic Research in 3rd cycle education. Johan was not only a sharp intellectual and a precise and original scholar, he also was a modest, knowledgeable, passionate and pleasant colleague. We will remember his subtle humour, his winning laughter and his great kindness. Our condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.
On behalf of the ELIA Representative Board:
Andrea Braidt, Vice-Rector Art/Research Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Chair of the ELIA Artistic Research Working Group and member of the Executive Group
