ELIA Executive Director Attends CHEAD Conference
ELIA Executive Director Maria Hansen recently attended the annual conference of the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design
(CHEAD), themed ‘The Agency of Art and Design
"ELIA and CHEAD have decided to work more closely together, so it was good to be at the CHEAD conference to see the UK colleagues many of whom are also member of ELIA," Hansen said.
Part of the conference took place at ELIA member institution Sheffield Hallam University Institute of the Arts
which is located in the beautiful, former Sheffield post office.
The timing of the CHEAD Conference coincided with the original Brexit deadline (29 March 2019) and therefore, naturally, this topic was on everyone’s mind. The Augar Review of higher education was also being discussed by all, as the outcome of this report could have major consequences for funding of higher arts education in the UK.
Hansen remarks it was a pleasure to see ELIA Representative Board member Kai Lehikoinen from University of the Arts Helsinki
in Sheffield speaking on Research and Strategic Interaction on Cultural Rights and Well-being in Finland
, as well as Jonathan Harris, Head of the School of Art at Birmingham City University
with his presentation, titled The Role of Culture Industry in the Death Cult of Global Capitalism
Hansen also had the honour of co-facilitating a workshop on Creative Collaboration post-Brexit.
"It was good to witness the lively conversation that ensued around this topic," she said. "My compliments to the colleagues at CHEAD for curating this thought-provoking conference!"
