ELIA 2018 Biennial Publication

04 July 2019

We are glad to share with you the publication which gathers selected presentations from thematic mobile sessions at the 15th ELIA Biennial Conference, Resilience and the City: Art, Education, Urbanism.

An unprecedented number of proposal submissions were received following the initial call after the conference, which took place in Rotterdam in November 2018 and was attended by more than 460 delegates.

The authors of the chosen presentations from the conference’s thematic mobile sessions uniquely interpreted the four themes: Shifting Centres, Shifting Margins; Art and Social Cohesion; Art and Economy; and Art and Innovation. Each theme provided a framework to examine how the arts can potentially play a vital role in building resilience, and these were  embedding them in local situations, generating different learning environments, and manifesting them in artistic approaches.

This publication is a glance back to the conference sessions and a reference to return to. Hopefully it will bring you back to the inspiring moments or give you a sneak peek into the content you may have missed.

The ELIA Biennial Conference 2018 could not have been the successful event that it was without the great support and efforts of the steering group and the selection jury; our partners, their teams and individuals who provided their time and energy for this purpose. We would also like to thank the speakers, contributors and the editorial group for their input to the publication.

Our highest gratitude and appreciation go to the 2018 ELIA Biennial Conference hosts, Codarts University of the Arts and Willem de Kooning Academy.

We wish you an inspirational time of reading and hope to see you at the next Biennial Conference 2020 in Zurich or another one of our upcoming events!
