The following paper: Barcelona, Beijing, Birmingham by Jonathan Harris, PhD, Birmingham City University, highlights and questions the ideas of independence and autonomy as these apply to Brexit and higher arts education institutions. The essay was originally published in Third Text Volume 32: Issue 5-6 (2018)
Harris’ paper is ever more relevant at the beginning of 2020. As the Conservatives won the majority in Parliament in the December 2019 election, this January the UK Parliament will likely be ratifying the Brexit deal that is currently on the table. If so, a transition period will follow (until December 2020) in which negotiations about the future relation between Europe and the UK will be central. ELIA is following these developments closely and will keep the membership informed in the coming months.
