Estonian Academy of the Arts,
Since 2015, I have been the Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn. I have worked in the Academy since 1992, where I built up the Institute of Art History and continue to serve as the professor of history of modern architecture.
Leading the country’s only art academy is a challenge in the post-communist society, ruled by a neo-liberal government. We have overcome a stressful and long-lasting saga of constructing a new building for the academy. We finally moved into a reconstructed former stockings factory in a very attractive location in Tallinn in recent August and had entered a very inspiring period of learning and discovering the opportunities of the new building.
Besides leading the school, I am active as an architectural historian and critic. Mainly, I have researched the Estonian and Baltic architecture during the inter-war and Soviet periods and have also explored the landscape architecture and heritage protection. I co-chaired the Estonian delegation at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee 2010-13, which was a very enriching experience.
Since 2010, I am a fellow in the Estonian Academy of Sciences and since 2014 act as the Vice-President of the Academy.
