The annual PIE meeting explores questions concerning the meaning of internationalisation for higher arts education institutions through roundtable discussions, presentations and working sessions.
As a platform for knowledge sharing, PIE gathers international officers and policymakers who are researching, advising on, and making strategies and policies.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 20 MARCH 2020
Along with our host, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design Bratislava, we continue monitoring the evolving situation around the spreading of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), guided by information from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the government of Slovakia.
By Monday 23 March, we will inform you on the final decision whether the PIE Meeting in Bratislava will proceed as planned or get postponed.
ELIA MEMBERS Registration Fee: 60 EURO.
The registration fee includes seminar materials, access to all sessions and two lunches.
Delegates who wish to join for DINNER on Monday 6 April 2020 are requested to select the additional fee for 40 EURO.
At the dinner a set menu will be offered to delegates. Dietary requirements will be taken into account. Delegates who do not choose to join the dinner and complete payment for the dinner at the time of registration will not be granted a seat.

|Karina Kaindl: “A road map to internationalisation”

|Various activities, ideas and aims are part of internationalisation efforts. To look ahead we need to understand where we as an art & design school stand. We conducted a profound analysis of everything that falls into ‘internationalisation’ at our department by gathering different kinds of data, information, expectations and perspectives. As a result, we came up with a road map providing us with a better understanding of what we do and what we don’t do in terms of internationalisation and where we are confronted with all kinds of challenges. Finally, we clustered the scattered activities into five fields of actions and proposed a catalogue of measures.|
|Annemarie van Vliet: “A joint Dutch initiative on internationalization of arts universities”

|In order to continuously improve the quality of arts education in the Netherlands, the Dutch universities of the arts developed a joint strategic agenda for collaboration. Over the last 4 years, the arts universities have been focusing on the themes Talent Development, Flexibilisation, Research and Internationalization & Stakeholder Relations. In this session, the presenters will show how they are creating a bigger awareness among institutional leadership about the meaning of internationalization and its impact on education, research, collaboration and the organization. Finally, during a round table sessions, they will share an instrument they’ve created: the 'Checklist on Internationalization', and exchange ideas about it with the participants.|
|Sandra Mell: “Border as a Place”
Estonian Academy of Arts, Estonia
|Border as a Place was a name of an international intensive course led by the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA). This title however, represents well the geopolitical position of Estonia, where EKA is the only art and design institution at higher education level. Estonia is the border country of European Union to the East. Due to its somewhat peripheric situation, EKA has always actively participated in international collaboration and initiatives, and 70% of its alumni have participated in some format of international exchange. Internationalisation is a clear goal at EKA, thanks to its position as a border country of the European Union. Therefore, this presentation will explore how to be international when you live in a border country and what are the benefits of this move.|
|Aparajita Dutta: “Diversity and Inclusion”

|A topic we cannot ignore anymore, which is difficult to discuss, debate and put into practice. One that asks us to move away from our comfort zone and maybe our colour-blind positions. One that makes us hold the mirror in front of us and ask questions: Are we diverse and inclusive enough? What do we mean by diversity? What do we mean by inclusion? The first step is being aware of our own prejudice.|
|Regina Werner & Anne Stresing: “International relations and ethical questions in times of crisis: how do art schools bridge the gap?”

|International co-operations between institutions of higher education have long been considered to be not only of academic value, but to be also a moral good and a stabilizing force in a globalizing world. However, the rise of populist nationalism and the increasing control that repressive regimes have exerted in recent years raises questions of ethical responsibility for art schools’ relations more acutely than before. This session will present three factual cases of collaboration in crisis and explore with the PIE audience how ethical principles can be applied and how noble intentions put down in internationalization strategy papers can be realized in practice. The goal of this session is not to deliver ready-made answers, but to contribute to a process of negotiating valid responses to very real challenges.

|Research shows that added value of international students in the community increases the quality of programmes. In recent years, universities have seen their numbers of international students increase greatly. However, this increase also comes with new challenges for the educational institutions in terms of dealing with issues that international students may face such as feelings of loneliness, misunderstandings with the teaching methods, practical problems with the municipality or government, and more. This presentation aims at discussing the possible causes and solutions to these issues and challenges: how can we take on the responsibility that came with the internationalisation of our student population?|
|David Serra Navarro, Carme Ortiz Valeri, Josep Maria Hortet: “Internationalisation programme: co-design and local action”
ESDAP Catalonia, Spain
|ESDAP Catalonia is an institution for higher education in design distributed on 7 campuses throughout Catalonia. It was founded in 2010 to establish innovation in the artistic discipline of design. Our internationalisation programme is divided into three key sections: mobility, curriculum and artistic research. With this project, the institution is working to provide totally specialised education on the role of the artistic discipline of design for the public sector, to explore the relation between design and social change and to encourage practices that help to make cities fairer and more sustainable places based on local action transferred to global knowledge.|
|Olivera Batajić Sretenović: “Mobility events across Europe that matter locally”
University of the Arts in Belgrade, Serbia
|Mapping the Local was a block seminar originally developed at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest as a way of integrating Erasmus students with local Hungarian students, and as a theory & practice-based program. The seminar presents an overview of the major phenomena, trends, and issues of contemporary art based on various subjects in each semester in the form of presentations, held by invited lecturers and field trips to museums, institutions and artist studios. Each year there is one global theme of Mapping the specific city, and some specific theme that deals with the actual social situation.|

If travelling by plane, there are two options:
EU delegates of an institution or university can apply for an organisational support grant: a contribution to any cost incurred by the institutions in relation to activities in support of staff mobility, to comply with the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) in Programme Countries, and with the principles of the ECHE as reflected in the inter-institutional agreements agreed in the case of institutions from Partner Countries.
