Statement from ELIA President Andrea B. Braidt

Dear ELIA Members,

As the impact of the virus continues to grow rapidly and significantly affect all sectors, I wanted to reach out to you to highlight ELIA’s commitment to supporting higher arts education institutions during these unprecedented times. As a result of the risks caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, ELIA has had to take necessary precautions and has postponed several events scheduled in the coming months. This has been a great disappointment, but the safety of our members, partners and event participants remains paramount. Read more

ELIA 2020 Spring Events Postponed

Due to the risks and health concerns associated with the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, unfortunately, several of ELIA’s upcoming events have been postponed until further notice. ETHO Annual Meeting, PIE Annual Meeting and ELIA-ICFAD Global Seminar will all take place either later this year or in 2021. We will inform you as soon as new dates have been confirmed.
In the meantime, we are keen to enable the exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas online and are busy preparing a programme of digital events. Stay tuned for news about ELIA’s upcoming webinar series.
Travel cancellation/postponement advice: Please note that the majority of transport providers, such as rail and airline companies, have created new policies in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. In many cases, this can result in extra flexibility for customers when changing travel dates and/or requesting refunds (often as vouchers) – even when original ticket conditions did not include these options.

If you are looking to postpone or cancel your tickets, we advise you to go on the website of your transport provider to find out which new options could apply to your booking.

6 Stress-relieving Tips for Working & Teaching Remotely

Like many of you, the ELIA Team's work routines have also shifted. We are now working remotely. Our phone lines are diverted and still in operation. Providing support to our members is our number one priority during these unprecedented times.

Here's an article we prepared that might make your transition to a virtual workplace a little easier. These tips are not solely for your time and work management but include as well some references on how to convert your lectures and classes to digital. More on this topic soon.

Exclusive Access for Members to ELIA's First Webinar

On 16 March ELIA held its first webinar – an online consultation with the Sustainable Careers Platform. The webinar featured a presentation by guest speaker, Pascal Gielen, professor of cultural sociology at the University of Antwerp and editor in chief of Arts in Society. Pascal addressed the role of artists and creative practitioners in society while emphasising how they should be equipped to maximise their career potential. During the Q&A session, the four priority areas of the Sustainable Careers platform were presented and discussed by the working group and attendees.

EACEA Responds To COVID-19 Crisis
EACEA, the European agency in charge of Erasmus+ and Creative Europe, has announced that they will apply maximum flexibility with regard to Erasmus+, European Solidary Corps and Creative Europe grants to areas affected by this crisis. “The Agency will follow the guidance issued by the Commission to the Erasmus+ National Agencies: the beneficiaries can invoke the “force majeure” clauses for activities affected by mobility restrictions. This will allow the Agency to assess the possibility to accept additional costs up to a maximum grant amount. It may also enable the Agency to postpone the planned activities.” Read full statements for Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps, and for Creative Europe.

Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 Deadlines Extended
Erasmus+ announced postponement of a number of application deadlines (complete list and new deadlines here), including Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) - now 26 May – all Higher Education Institutions (both current ECHE holders and new applicants) need to apply for this in order to be eligible for the 2021 – 2027 Erasmus+ programme. CULT Chair Calls For Help
The Higher Arts Education community, and more broadly, the education sector and creative industries, face serious challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. On 17 March, CULT Committee Chair Sabine Verheyen already called on the EU and member states to help the education and creative sectors to mitigate the effects of containing COVID-19 (see press release). ELIA is following these developments closely.
