Towards an ambitious innovation ecosystem for the Cultural and Creative Industries

As part of ELIA’s efforts to advocate for the interests of higher arts education institutions at the European Union, we have published this ELIA Position Paper, in support of the establishment by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) of a Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) for Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) within Horizon Europe.

The paper outlines how higher arts education can contribute to the success of the KIC, which has, in principle, been scheduled by the EIT to begin in 2022, as part of its 2021-2027 Strategy. However, the European Parliament, Commission and Council still need to confirm the budget of Horizon Europe, which includes a budget for KICs, in upcoming negotiations.

Last week, as part of ELIA's advocacy campaign, we reached out to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; the Commissioner of Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel; and the CULT (Culture and Education) and ITRE (Industry, Research and Energy) Committees of the European Parliament to bring this matter to their attention.

On 4 December, ELIA requested support from members towards this campaign. For more information, please contact the ELIA office.

Call for Contributions: 16th ELIA Biennial Conference

Deadline: 6 January 2020

New ideas, new concepts, the NEW itself most commonly arises at the edges or at the interfaces between traditional disciplines – be it in arts,  sciences or everyday life. It is often this space in between – virtual or physical – where we as academics, artists or creatives can invent, innovate, compose and create.

The ELIA Biennial 2020 is dedicated to these edges and interfaces. We want to explore new hinges between the most diverse disciplines in arts, science and society, both inside and outside the walls of academies and universities.

Colleagues from ELIA member institutions are invited to contribute to the programme with their most innovative projects, integrated ideas, and transdisciplinary practices.

For more information read the full Call for Contributions. To submit a presentation proposal, please fill in the submission form before 6 January 2020

Arts in an Era of Populism

ELIA is organising a Global Seminar in collaboration with ICFAD – International Council of Fine Arts Deans, kindly hosted by ELISAVA Barcelona School of Design and Engineering.

This international event brings together leaders of higher arts education institutions from North America and Europe to exchange both strategic and practical ideas. In this frame, we address the challenging role of the Arts in an Era of Populism, what are its implications and which alternative strategies can we imagine.

The Global Seminar will take place on 8 and 9 June 2020 in Barcelona, and is open to members of ELIA and ICFAD. Register now!
