Storytelling in Africa as an aid for motivating art students for mathematics

Motivating art oriented students for mathematics can be done through storytelling, as it was the case in Africa, for ages. This may come as a surprise to many art students, who often share romantic prejudices about the black continent. The mathematical ‘sona’ sand graphs for instance were drawn while telling stories. However, the story of the oldest design object, the 22000-years-old Ishango rod, recalls a modern tale as in “2001, A Space Odyssey”. Most of the stories will be told with the help of participants, as in the author’s theatre show "Africa+", performed with the percussion trio "Dakar Electric".
