Dear ELIA Newsletter Reader,
I am pleased to introduce this Newsletter, the main focus this time is the 10th Biennial Conference. We have almost 450 delegates registered. Registration is still open, but we will stop when the 500 registrations are reached.
During the General Assembly meeting in Gothenburg, members will receive the ELIA Report of the past two years and the Four Year Development Plan that the Representative Board proposes. The next Representative Board will be elected in Gothenburg, I personally hope that many members will be present and give input for the future ELIA activities.
In this newsletter you can read about the next Teachers’ Academy that will take place in Sofia. The programme is very promising with masterclasses from prominent teachers. The ‘call for workshops and presentations’ was emailed around and can be found on the website; proposals are already coming in.
During the Biennial Conference in Gothenburg you will receive more detailed information on future activities and events ELIA has in store for you.
I am very much looking forward to welcome you all in Gothenburg and raise a glass in the tent!
I wish you a pleasant read, please contact us with comments, suggestions and ideas.
Warm regards,
Carla Delfos
Executive Director ELIA

Fringe session: Artistic research in Europe

The exhibition Talkin' loud and sayin' something! , which is the centre of a symposium at the 10th ELIA Biennial, has opened at the Gothenburg Museum of Art ( www.konstmuseum.goteborg.se ) on 24 September. There will be another opening event as part of the Conference programme.
The exhibition presents works by major artists who include research as part of their artistic activity. A premise underlying this project is the belief that contemporary art can develop interestingly by exploring several of the links between advanced artistic work and other forms of knowledge and creativity. This exhibition is the first of its kind and aims to open discussion of what art research can contribute to art and society.
Participating artists are:
- Sopowan Boonnimitra - lak-ka-pid-lak-ka-perd
- Heli Rekula - The Absent Body
- Jacqueline Donachie - Weight
- Annika Karlsson Rixon and Anna Viola Hallberg - State of Mind

The opening ceremony will be enlivened by the performance Burst before we break! Twenty-one students stage a journey past the conventions of what to play and how to do it — also when the tables are turned.
The composer Staffan Mossenmark (University of Gothenburg) initiated this project and invited Choreographer and Professor Efva Lilja (University College of Dance in Stockholm) to join. Together with students from Gothenburg and Stockholm, Staffan and Efva have conducted this investigative process within — and between — the different art forms music, dance and circus.

At the Biennial’s Interactive Forum, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night from 22h00 – 23h00, there will be presentations in the tradition of Pecha Kucha (Jap. “sound of whisper”) – which means 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide, period. It is still possible to send in a proposal by means of the online Registration Form. Presentations confirmed so far include exciting topics such as Autonomous Projects in Public, Creative Co-makership, Diversity and Contrast, The Singer in Empty Space, and A Passion for the real.

The Importance of Artistic Research and its Contribution to 'New Knowledge' in a Creative Europe
The ELIA strategy paper on artistic research sets out an approach for the immediate future with regard to the development of a research culture and the creation of ‘new knowledge’ in Higher Arts Education. The inclusion of the third cycle in the Bologna process has had significant impact: many institutes of the arts are now in the process of establishing research teams and centres, and have developed a research infrastructure, policy and strategy.
It is not the role of ELIA to articulate or create a fixed position on behalf of its members on the definition of arts research. Its primary function is to stimulate further cross disciplinary and cross institutional discourse with the aim of creating a persuasive, compelling and collective argument focused towards all interested parties, advocating the essential value and importance of arts research as a significant and specialist contribution to new knowledge.
Therefore, the strategy paper expresses ELIA’s full commitment to:
- Intensify its function as a European platform for constructive debate between researchers, research centres, and member institutions on standards and new developments;
- Compile expertise and contribute to the scrutiny of quality of research through peer review in order to promote the spread of good practice;
- Establish an internal monitoring group to coordinate and evaluate ELIAs various research initiatives across its wide range of projects and events.

16th Culture Action Europe/EFAH General Assembly
23-25 October 2008, Marseille, France
Culture Action Europe, formerly known as EFAH, holds its Annual Conference in Marseille on 23-25 October. This year's conference will explore the ever more important question of the role of culture in Europe’s external relations. Its goal is to understand better the political context for such work and its impacts on cultural players (some of whom are already developing cooperation projects beyond of Europe’s borders).
The two main themes are:
- The place of culture in the Union’s external relations:
- What is really at stake in external European relations and how is the Union facing up to the challenge?
- What are the needs of operators on the ground and what should Europe be doing in this area?
- What is the role of local authorities in the implementation of Europe’s international and external cultural policies?
- The role of civil society in developing Europe’s cultural policies:
- How can we influence Europe’s cultural action? What are the interests that we need to defend or promote?
- How can we better structure and coordinate our voices?

DeSForM 2008 - the 4th European Workshop on Design & Semantics of Form & Movement
6-7 November 2008, Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach, Germany
On 6 and 7 November the next DeSForM workshop will take place at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main/Germany. The actual debate about Design & Research shows that there is a need for more and detailed knowledge about the disciplinary aspects of Design. Inter-, trans- and even multidisciplinary discourses are necessary, because today Design is at the same eye level as other scientific disciplines. But Design today has its own objects, goals and methods.
Since the 1970´s knowledge about Design has been developed continuously – the „Theory of Product Language“ is widely recognized as an important disciplinary kernel of Product Design and Design Research. The HfG Offenbach, as an important centre of product language, is looking forward to hosting the next DeSForM workshop, open to teachers, practitioners, researchers and students.
