Dear members,

We are pleased to present the new format of the newsletter that will be published 6 times a year from now on. Many activities will take place the coming weeks, but I would like to specifically highlight the "call" for the E3-film project, an interesting competition for your students to make a proposal for a short film. Also the ongoing possibility to apply for the Bloom Hotel project is an interesting opportunity for your students!
Furthermore we had the launch of the new Erasmus project artesnet (with 61 partners) and we are preparing the publication of the previous Erasmus project inter}artes, to be ready March 2008. Also in March you will receive the registration brochure for the ELIA Conference in Gothenburg, the team is working hard on the preparation of the programme and it promises to become really interesting. The ELIA Board will have its meeting on 5 and 6 April in Amsterdam so if you have issues you would like for them to discuss, please inform us. I hope you will appreciate the newsletter and we will keep you informed!

Kind regards,
Carla Delfos
Executive Director ELIA

On 18 January we have successfully launched our new three year Erasmus network artesnet Europe. Artesnet is the successor of our previous network inter}artes. At the launch the contract between the network chair, the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA), Sofia, Bulgaria and the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) has been signed. Stanislav Semerdjiev, rector of NATFA has given the starting shot!

The network promotes project in partnership between creative enterprise and local communities, and contributes to the 2009 European Year of Creativity, Culture and Education.
Its outcomes are documented in a 2010 Yearbook on collaborative artistic research, and a specialised web page promoting the expertise and services offered in the field of quality enhancement, external examining, institutional review and learning outcomes.
A major European arts teachers’ academy will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria on 1-3 July 2009. Special activities will also be organised in Turkey.

ELIA is issuing a call for proposals for short videos (maximum 3 minutes) within the context of the European Commission’s promotion of multilingualism. The competition is being organised as a contribution to the 2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, EYID.
The European Commission's objective in launching this competition is to raise awareness among young European audiences of the benefits of Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity and the opportunities they provide. The main target groups will be young people accessing the video clips online via viral marketing, audiences of European public broadcasting stations, and educational institutes throughout Europe.

Applicants should submit creative and witty video spots to be used by the European Commission in its campaign to raise awareness of multilingualism. Applicants are free to interpret the theme of the competition, bearing in mind that the goal is to convey the idea that language learning can be fun. The possibility of featuring "language ambassadors" and their personal experiences of cultural adaptation (including misunderstandings) could be cited by way of an example. These might include popular public figures from the world of sports, music, cinema, or fashion keen to help break down some of the barriers that young people often face when learning languages.
Applicants are encouraged to produce projects in which their ideas are transmitted through visual effects rather than spoken or written texts.

Students are asked to develop an artistic proposal for a video with a maximum length of 3 minutes. The proposal should reflect Europe's linguistic diversity and the role played by different languages in intercultural dialogue in Europe.
All students from ELIA member institutions from the 27 European Union member countries plus Norway, Iceland, Turkey and Liechtenstein can apply.

There is a lot to gain for the students:

For this project, ELIA has launched a website: www.e3film.eu

The project is good professional practice for students for fine arts institutions. Students are asked to cereate their own mural on one of the many walls in the hotel.

Next to the opportunity and experience of a life time they get a fee of € 850,-. Their travel is also payed for and their CV will be on display in their own room!

We are still looking for students! For more information click here.

Designing Design Education
Amsterdam, 5-7 June 2008

The second Designtrain conference focuses on the challenges facing first year students in design & architecture.
It seems that the public view on the role of architecture is more and more affecting the approach and the design education of students of environmental, architectural and interior design. The first year education process can be considered as the start of a training process that prepares students for the confrontation with public demands in design studios. How can architectural education promote better and more varied urban models and designs, and stimulate students to partake in their development?
Design may be considered as an instrument and a medium of expression, an international language, but as such it also acts as an international equalizer of tastes and needs, as 'international style' in modern architecture testifies. Still, students have different learning styles, education retains local flavours, and schools differ in their standards and charcteristics. Since there are numerous methods of education, especially in the basic fields of architecture like design theories and practice, fundamentals of technical construction and art & architectural history, each school of architecture will lay claim to its own special way and success.
The Designtrain congress is devoted to sharing and developing methods of teaching that face these challenges.

The International Council of Fine Arts Deans (ICFAD) partners with the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) to strengthen the position and influence of the arts and arts in higher education at regional, national and international levels. ICFAD is a network of arts administrators representing institutions of higher education from around the world including arts-focused institutions, small private liberal arts schools and large research universities.

To strengthen its international perspective, ICFAD encourages global understanding and cooperation through its triennial international symposium. This year, ICFAD will hold its 7th triennial symposium in Dubrovnik, Croatia from July 15 - 18. The conference theme is Libertas:
Freedom as a Result and Condition of Art in which some of Croatia's leading arts administrators and creative leaders will discuss the traditions, challenges and values of international festivals and cultural exchanges. Each evening of the symposium, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy performances of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival in open-air sites throughout this fascinating city. For ELIA members the early registration discount has been extended to the 1st of April.

ICFAD's annual conference provides professional leadership and managerial training as well as sessions on timely topics affecting the arts. This year ICFAD will hold its conference in Portland, Oregon from October 21-25. The conference theme is Creating Climates of Change and will open with Ben Cameron, Program Director for the Arts of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

However, the best resources available to influence and strengthen the arts in higher education are the ICFAD members themselves. One of its newest benefits is an online Forum that allows members to pose questions and receive insightful and helpful advice through threaded conversation.

For more information concerning the upcoming ICFAD symposium or conferences or if you are interested in becoming a member of ICFAD, please visit www.icfad.org

Questioning Qualities: an international working conference on fundamental problems of artistic research The Bergen National Academy of the Arts has issued a call for presentations for its 5th Sensuous Knowledge conference in Solstrand, Norway on 23-25 September.

Under the heading "Questioning Qualities" this year’s Sensuous Knowledge conference will focus upon values within and criteria for an appraisal of quality in artistic research - including the overall question of whether these differ from values and criteria for quality within the arts themselves. As in the former conferences the general aim is a double one: to develop ways of talking about, analyzing and evaluating examples of artistic research, and to consider the special character of cognition related to artistic creativity.

Proposal should be sent in the form of a 1000-word abstract to sensuous.knowledge@khib.no . The deadline is 14 April .
For more information, visit the conference website: www.sensuousknowledge.org

Access to Music: New Perspectives in Distribution, Education and Politics

During the Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the EMC Conference will investigate specific needs for Access to Music , taking into consideration different cultural backgrounds of people living together in Europe today. The EMC conference will offer the opportunity to discuss new perspectives in music education, in the distribution of music and in the needs towards political settings. How can we guarantee the human right on a holistic development of divers artistic expression for every child and adult? How can we guarantee fair remuneration for all artists when the rapidly changing world of media provides free access to the world music repertoire to everybody? Which regulations or liberalisations on political level does the music sector need in order to face changes in technology and society?

Third international Conference on THE ARTS IN SOCIETY
28-31 July, Birmingham Institute of Arts and Design

The purpose of the annual Arts Conference is to create an intellectual frame of reference for the arts and arts practices, and to create an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of the arts in society. It is intended as a place for critical engagement, examination, and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world, on stage, in museums and galleries, on the streets, and in communities.
The theme of this year’s Conference is Art as Communication. Its scope is deliberately broad and ambitious. Our times demand nothing less than cross-disciplinary and holistic approaches. The breadth of the conference and its accompanying journal, however, are without prejudice to finely grained discussion of the specific, the local, and the grounded practices.
