ELIA and AEC Open Letter on the Key Competences for Lifelong Learning

29 March 2018

"Culture is the glue that holds all competences together and advances Europe toward being a more cohesive and inclusive society."

Following the joint statement released by ELIA and AEC in November 2017, the two organisations consulted several leading European Higher Arts Education Institutions and sent an open letter today to the members of the Culture and Education Committee of the European Parliament and the EACEA at the European Commission. The open letter is a proposal for two amendments to the text on the eight key competences identified by the European Commission for a recommendation to the Council of Europe. Read the full letter here

With these alterations to the proposed key competences, our sector should be better positioned to contribute to formulating a common reference framework for education and culture.

Maria Hansen, ELIA Executive Director,

"There is a worldwide acknowledgement of the importance of including the arts in the list of the most important competences that citizens, and in particular the younger generations, need to acquire to be able to fully contribute to future society. I am pleased that ELIA and the AEC are joining forces once again on this matter, on behalf of the more than 500 Higher Arts Education institutions we represent."
