ELIA will organise its 12th Biennial Conference in 2012 and is calling upon its members to nominate a venue.

ELIA is currently preparing the 11th Biennial Conference that will take place in Nantes in October 2010. Since its founding in 1990 ELIA has organised 10 Biennial Conferences in the following locations:

• 1990 in Amsterdam
  Theme: Imagination and Diversity, Europe’s richness
  co-operation on education in the arts in co-operation with the Amsterdam School of the Arts
• 1992 in Strasbourg
  Theme: Connecting with others: being different, living, creating and dreaming together
  in co-operation with the École des Arts Décoratifs
• 1994 in Berlin
  Theme: "taken at the flood" - Art in our Times
  in co-operation with the Hochschule der Künste Berlin
• 1996 in Lisbon
  Theme: "Reflections on the Human Face"
  in co-operation with the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa
• 1998 in Helsinki
  Theme: "...where are we going?" The Artist as Communicator in the next millennium
  in co- operation with the Academy of Fine Arts, Sibelius Academy, Theatre Academy, University of Art and Design Helsinki.
• 2000 in Barcelona
  Theme: "A Bounty, Boundless as the Sea", Art's Generosity
  in co-operation with the Institut del Teatre
• 2002 in Dublin
  Theme: "Comhar"
  in co-operation with Arts Academies in Ireland
• 2004 in Luzern
  Theme: "Challenging the Frame"
  in co-operation with all Swiss Art Universities
• 2006 in Gent
  Theme: Art, Engagement and Education
  in co-operation with Hogeschool Gent, Belgium
• 2008 in Gothenburg
  Theme: "ELIA 10th"
  in co-operation with Goteborg University, Sweden

The ELIA Biennial Conference is usually organised in October and attracts roughly 500 delegates, representing more than 40 countries, giving the host institute(s) a unique opportunity to present themselves to Higher Art Education Institutions and Universities from all over the world. The host institute’s students and teachers are encouraged to be involved in the development of the conference. Before starting the co-operation an agreement will be signed between ELIA and the Host. The budget is generally estimated on € 470.000 from which the Host guarantees a minimum amount of € 150.000 (a part of this amount can be ‘in kind’) with the understanding that additional funding of approximately € 170.000 is required and should be raised nationally and locally. ELIA guarantees to raise a minimum amount of € 150.000 in participation fees and grants.

Organising the event is a joint venture, but a general division of the tasks is anticipated as follows:

Host

• Arranges venues for conference
• Secures national and local funding and sponsorship
• Is an active partner in the steering committee and in preparing the programme
• Appoints a local coordinator
• Organises the cultural programme
• Organises the logistics such as catering, hotel bookings etc.

ELIA

• Responsible for all communications, reporting and publications
• Prepares work/time schedules and budget
• Organises the programme as decided upon by the steering committee (speakers, sessions, etc)
• Secures participation fees and EU funding
• Recruits and registers participants

To nominate your city, please write an application in which you outline why you wish to be the host of the 12th ELIA Biennial Conference. Please explain the venue possibilities, the financial support and possible partnerships you foresee. The ELIA Executive Group will select a maximum of 3 venues that will be further investigated through a visit by Chris Wainwright, ELIA President and Carla Delfos, ELIA Executive Director.
