The University College of Borås’s ambition is to become Sweden’s first University of Professions, with a new postgraduate course taking into account both scientific and experience-based knowledge. The University College has 11,000 students and 600 employees. Our modern campus is situated in central Borås. Teaching and research are carried out in our flagship fields of Textiles and Fashion, Library and Information Science, Health Care, Teacher Training, Business and Informatics, and Engineering. The Textiles and Fashion Faculty (THS) is the only textiles college in Sweden. The THS offers five different study programmes leading to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in textiles design, fashion design, hand weaving, textile economics and textile engineering. There are also several shorter courses and a large number of independent courses. The faculty carries out research in textile design, economics, crafts and engineering.
The research within the Smart Textiles field at The Swedish School of Textiles focuses on developing techniques, methods, and aesthetic perspectives in the design of a new generation of textile products, encompassing everything from experiments in textile applications to experimental fashion design.
The School has recently been awarded a substantial donation from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, used to purchase highly specialised knitting equipment. The equipment brings new possibilities in wide-ranging knitting experiments, using conductive materials of various kinds, fibre optic materials, carbon fibre materials, memory metals, and so forth. Central to the School’s design research is also experiments in weaving, after-treatments and printing, and the development of techniques and methods for the integration of electronic and digital functionality in textile constructions and products.
The doctoral candidate employments beforehand are part of the University College’s ambition to strengthen research within the Smart Textiles Design field and is directed especially at developing the design aesthetical foundations of the field, i.e. developing theoretical and practical understanding for expressional possibilities in new textile technology.
The research is carried out in close co-operation with national and international research groups. The position will bring substantial possibilities of specialisation within a most attractive research field.
Ph.D. education is carried out in co-operation with the Human-Technology-Design research school at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg.
The position shall, for at least 80%, be devoted to research studies and dissertation. Remaining hours is devoted to teaching at basic levels and at advanced level in relevant courses, tutoring of degree works and participation in smaller external projects and assignments.
The applicant must hold a Master’s degree in Textile Design, or equivalent. Employment is under the condition that the applicant is accepted as a Ph.D. student at the Human-Technology-Design research school at Chalmers University of Technology. Acceptance is based on the applicant’s ability to carry out research training in the field. Excellent command of English, in writing and speech, is also required.
