The future of Higher Arts Education in Europe
ESMAE, Porto, 7-8 May 2010
Dear artesnet partner,
We warmly invite you for the final partners meeting of artesnet Europe in Porto 7-8 May 2010. The seminar title refers to the core values of our project, which we kicked off in Amsterdam in January 2008: pro-actively designing the future of Higher Arts Education in Europe through knowledge sharing and peer learning. During the last network meeting we want to discuss the outcomes of our project, and, through the keynote presentations frame the discussions within the three strands: how does our work impact on policymaking. Central to the programme is the distinct outlook on the future of higher arts education in Europe. The programme is designed to serve as staff development for teachers, curriculum designers, managers and international co-coordinators.
We will meet in Porto at our partner institution ESMAE ( www.esmae.ipp.pt ) which will provide a unique location to enrich our meeting through a lovely venue, good food and sunshine. According to the original rules set out, all partners will get their flight reimbursed (consult the ELIA office if the flight costs exceeds 350 euro) and are invited to the lunches and a diner on Friday evening. Accommodation is on the partners institutions’ expense as well as the staff time invested. (See www.booking.com for reasonably priced convenient hotels.)
We will structure our discussions around three sets of questions, which at the same time provide the frame for the keynote presentations:
- Strand 1, Keynote: Dani Salvadori
- Are Creative Parterships the (only) appropriate vehicle for innovation of Higher Arts Education?
- How can Higher Arts Educational institutions capitalize on the productivity of creative partnerships?
- What impact can Creative Partnerships have on the mission of educational institutions, cultural organisations and the industry?
- Strand 2, Keynote: Marlies Leegwater
- How do the ministers ensure the engagement and quality of peers in the quality assurance and enhancement review process at a national level?
- How do the ministers ensure equality of opportunities of students regarding access to the three levels of higher education and the comparability of standards across the sector?
- How do the ministers ensure the methodologies adopted for the review of the three levels are appropriate to higher arts education?
- Strand 3, Keynote: Mick Wilson
- Will ‘researching’ ever be the same, once artists have become used to it?
- Will artist with a third cycle degree form a class on their own, become a new artistic proletariat, or an integrated element of the art world?
- Do educational experiments have an effect on the Arts and on Higher Art Education?
The conference will open with a plenary session on Friday 7 may at 14hrs. After the three keynote presentations we will break out in working groups. In the evening we invite you to a joint festive dinner. On Saturday we will continue our work in groups, have a speed dating lunch and finalise the official programme at 15.00 hrs. We expect all active artesnet Europe partners to be there and hope for the participation of those that have not yet had the chance to get actively involved. We also welcome delegates from outside artesnet Europe coming from all ELIA member institutions.

The latest newsletter has been sent in December 2009, with an overview of what has been done this year and what lies ahead.

National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts, Sofia
The theme of the 2009 Teachers’ Academy was “Storytelling”. Through keynotes by Dick Ross and Kristin Linklater, a full programme of workshops and presentations, and in bringing together an enthousiastic group of art teachers from all around Europe and abroad, we have explored the many roles that storytelling can play in higher arts education, ranging from street theatre and shadow plays to interactive environments and visual languages.
Papers from the Teachers’ Academy are now available on download at the TA site. The conference has also been covered on ELIAblog, and you can find pictures of the event here.

Hacettepe University, Ankara
Quality Enhancement in the Arts in a European Context
The working conference on Quality Assurance & Enhancement in Higher Arts Education in a European Context in Ankara last March has been a wonderful mutual learning experience. The feedback that both participants and speakers have provided was very positive and enthusiastic.

A total number of 65 delegates from 24 different Turkish Higher Art institutions have participated in the conference. 40 of the participants have joined the dinner on the Thursday evening at the ZENGER PAŞA KONAĞI restaurant located in the old city of Ankara.
The delegates' interest in the overall theme and contents of the conference resulted in vivid discussions and an open sphere of sharing best practice, discussing European and national efforts for a qualifications framework for Higher Arts Education and working in depth on self-evaluation experiences and the writing of learning outcomes. The warm hospitality of our hosts and the Turkish delegates and the open atmosphere in which delegates could meet and exchange with critical friends gave an extra dimension to the conference. On behalf of artesnet we would like to express our sincere gratitude towards the conference host, Hacettepe University and its staff. We heard artesnet partners say "The best artesnet workshop so far!"

On 1 April, artesnet sent the full documentation of its activities so far to the European Commission. You can click here to download the public part of the interim report.
The network explores key issues important for higher arts education at this stage of the Bologna process and looks ahead after 2010 at which issues remain or become priorities in the coming years in a rapidly changing European context of new employment opportunities for artists in the ‘Economy of Culture’, knowledge-based society and national/European qualifications frameworks. The network’s focus is very much on how we see the role of higher arts education further develop in European societies and the futures of our students and teachers. At the same time we shape that future in a truly European working environment through collaborative work.
Half way through the project period examples of Creative Partnership have been collected on a best practice basis reviewed at ‘knowledge circle’ meetings and a broad discussion at various international events has been facilitated. The online social network established showed ways of working which are at the heart of the ongoing discussion about ‘participation’. Within the field of Qualification Frameworks, the quality assurance pilot programme is on the way to further professionalising through training of experts from the sector and a self evaluation visit to Turkey revealed an enormous regional potential, providing the experts and involved partners with a truly mutual learning experience resulting in a local agenda for change and trans-national partnerships with Romania, Norway, UK and Czech Republic.
Included in the report was also a policy brief to artesnet partner institutions:
